Cord Blood Collection

Question:
How is cord blood collected in the delivery room?

Answer:

Collecting cord blood is painless and risk free for mom and baby. It is also simple and quick for your caregiver. The collection takes place immediately after birth and can be done with either a vaginal or cesarean birth. It does not change the birthing process in any way.

The cord blood is collected after the baby has been cut from the cord and can occur before or after the placenta is delivered. Simply put, the delivering physician or nurse midwife fills the collection bag with as much cord blood as possible. When you sign up with us, we provide your caregiver an information packet that contains collection instructions and an instructional video.  We are also available to them on our emergency pager number 24 hours a day.
